Standard Handbook for Civil Engineering
Civil engineering is that field of engineering concerned with planning, design, and construction for environmental control, development of natural resources, buildings, transportation facilities, and other structures required for the health, welfare, safety, employment, and pleasure of mankind. The purpose of this handbook is to provide in a single volume information that would be of greatest usefulness to those engaged in this field. It was written to meet the needs of consulting engineers, public works engineers, architects, contractors, educators, material and equipment suppliers, inspectors, construction labor, students, and many others. To insure authoritative treatment of every topic despite the enormous scope of civil engineering, the editor drew on the knowledge and experience of a Board of Consultants composed of outstanding civil engineers. They guided selection of subjects to be included, wrote various sections of the book, and reviewed the sections written by other contributors. The editor and publisher are deeply grateful to the Board and to the contributors for their help. Without it, production of this book would have been impossible.
