Soil Stabilization
It might be said that modern methods of road construction started when Macadam required the use of stone broken so that the largest pieces would fit in one's mouth. Crushed stone is still the most widely used material for road construction, but to ensure adequate performance the specification requirements have become much more complex and restrictive. As a consequence, it is not unusual to finds that, due to the scarcity and expense of recognized materials or to an unacceptable property of a local material, some treatment of the available material is both necessary and economic for the production of a satisfactory road pavement. Treatment aimed at the improvement and maintenance of load-bearing properties for soils is called "stabilization".
